Why Trust is Essential to Our Faith Part 2

Updated: Feb 9, 2024

Trust... It's a simple word that holds a multitude of meanings, especially when it comes to our relationship with God. Trust, faith, and belief - they are not just 'THAT' words, they are 'WHO' words, and they define our relationship with 'WHO' - God himself.

A Year of Trust

In this year, let's make trust our focus. It's not just about understanding the concept of trust, but truly experiencing what trust is like. Let's journey together in discovering what trust looks like, tastes like, and feels like in our lives.

Understanding Trust Through the Story of Abraham

When it comes to trust, the story of Abraham stands out. He is known as the father of faith, and his story provides a profound understanding of what trust in God looks like. Abraham, despite his old age and having no children, was called by God to leave his country and family religion. God made a life-changing promise to Abraham, assuring him that he would be the father of many people, as many as the stars.

Despite having no history or experiences with God, Abraham chose to trust Him. He had no past experiences, no creed to trust, and no intellectual idea of who God is. Yet, Abraham simply said, "I trust you, God." This act of faith was so profound that it was credited to him as righteousness. This is what faith looks like - it's not about an intellectual belief or understanding but a deep, heartfelt trust in God.

Our Faith is Not in an "That", but in a "Who"

Often, people reduce Christianity to a name-only religion. It becomes about checking off a list of beliefs - Do you believe that Jesus is God's son? Do you believe that the Bible is God's word? Do you believe that Jesus died for your sins? While these beliefs are important, it's not just about believing in 'that'. Our faith is in 'Who', and that 'Who' is God.

Consider this, even the demons believe in God and shudder, but do they trust God? Trust is about letting go, surrendering our understanding, and placing our faith squarely in God. It's like riding a bike; you have to let go of your feet squarely on the earth and trust the bike.

Letting Go of Control, Being Right and Clarity

So, what are we supposed to let go of? What does control look like in our lives? Control is not just about dominating others; it's also about being right. We invest so much time and energy in being right in our Christianity, but it's not about being right, it's about trusting God.

Take Abraham, for example, how much was he right when he believed God? He hardly knew God, yet he chose to trust. Many of us trust more in being right than trusting God. We believe we have to bring understanding to the table with God, but that's not the case. Trust is not about understanding; it's about surrendering our understanding and trusting God.

Trust is a "Who" Word

Trust is not a 'that' word; it's a 'who' word. When we say we trust, it's not about understanding or clarity; it's about our relationship with God. It's about saying, "No matter what happens, I trust you, God."

Journeying in Trust

So, as we journey in this year of trust, let's strive to let go of control, of being right, and of our need for understanding and clarity. Let's learn the art of letting go and placing our trust squarely in God. Remember, our faith isn't in an 'that' but in a 'Who,' and that 'Who' is God.

So, are you ready to trust?
