One of the most remarkable events in the Gospel of John is the feeding of the 5,000. This miracle is not only a testament to Jesus' compassion and divine power but also a profound lesson in spiritual vision.

In Luke 9:13-16, we read:

But he said to them, “You give them something to eat.” They said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish—unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.” For there were about five thousand men. And he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” And they did so and had them all sit down. And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said: “Thank You”.

The phrase "looked up" is significant. It is the same Greek word used when Jesus opened the scroll in the synagogue, as recorded in Luke 4:18-19: To recover sight!!!

The Importance of Spiritual Vision

Why is spiritual vision so crucial? The Bible advises us not to rely solely on what we see with our physical eyes. 2 Corinthians 5:7 reminds us: For we walk by faith, not by sight.

This principle underscores the significance of perceiving beyond the physical realm. In Luke 17:20-21, Jesus explains that the kingdom of God is not something that can be observed with the eyes:

Some of the Pharisees asked Jesus, “When will the kingdom of God come?” Jesus answered, “God’s kingdom is coming, but not in a way that you will be able to see with your eyes. People will not say, ‘Look, here it is!’ or, ‘There it is!’ because God’s kingdom is within you.

2 Corinthians 4:18 further emphasizes this point:

So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Practicing Spiritual Sight

Oswald Chambers profoundly states:

“It is the unseen and the spiritual in people, that determines the outward and the actual.”

This insight aligns with 1 Peter 1:8-9: Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

King David's prayer in Psalm 139:23-24 is a powerful example of seeking spiritual insight: and lead me in the way everlasting.

Trevor Hudson poignantly notes: “We don’t change from our experience, we change when we reflect on our experience.”

Put differently, we view our experiences through a spiritual lens to uncover the Father's intentions behind those experiences.

Conclusion

In our spiritual journey, seeing with our spiritual eyes is essential. As we reflect on the miracles and teachings of Jesus, let us move to perceive the unseen and eternal truths that guide our faith and transform our lives.
