Is Jesus Real? A Faith Built on Truth, Not Emotion

Some individuals in our society hold the belief that Jesus Christ was never a real historical figure. They may even consider those who believe in Him to be foolish or irrational.

That raises an important question: Was Jesus truly real, or is faith just a comforting idea?

This is the focus of today’s message.

The Modern Arguments Against Jesus

If you’ve spent any time in today’s culture, you’ve likely heard statements like:

• “Jesus never even existed—He’s a myth.”

• “The resurrection story just grew over time like a legend.”

• “Faith is just emotional comfort—something people lean on to feel better.”

That last one may be the most common.

But here’s the truth:

Christianity didn’t begin because people felt something…it began because something happened.

Our faith is not built on emotion. Emotion flows from a faith that is built on truth.

So What Is Truth?

Truth is not based on feelings.

Truth is that which matches reality—and can be tested by evidence.

In Acts 1:3, we’re told that Jesus presented Himself alive after His suffering with “many convincing proofs.”

God didn’t say, “Just believe. ”He gave us something to believe in.

And like many before us, we can honestly say:

“The evidence compels me.”

Faith Is a Response, Not a Guess

Faith is often misunderstood.

Faith is not wishing something is true…it’s trusting something that is true.

Even now, there are pieces of evidence that consistently lead us back to that moment—from Good Friday through Easter.

We don’t need these things to believe…but they remind us:

Our faith isn’t floating in the air.

You’re Standing on Something Real

Let this be a reminder:

• You’re not foolish

• You’re not naive

• You’re not just emotional

You are standing on something real.

You don’t have to hold onto your faith like it might slip away. Your faith is anchored in something that actually happened.

A Glimpse at the Evidence

Let’s talk about one example that often sparks curiosity: the Shroud of Turin.

Many dismiss it as fake—something created centuries later. It’s often said to be only about 700 years old and possibly a medieval invention.

But the deeper you look, the more interesting it becomes.

What Makes It Unique?

• The image is extremely superficial—only microns deep into the fibers

• It is not painted, dyed, or burned in any known way

• It behaves like a photographic negative and even encodes 3D information

There is still no known medieval—or even modern—process that fully explains how it was made.

The Pollen Evidence

In the 1970s, criminologist Max Frei analyzed pollen samples from the cloth.

He found:

• Pollen from plants native to the Middle East

• Out of 58 samples, most traced back to the region around Jerusalem

• Others matched areas in northern Italy, where the cloth has been kept for centuries

The Details of Crucifixion

The markings on the cloth align with Roman crucifixion practices:

• Scourging wounds

• A crown of thorns

• Nail marks in wrists and feet

• A spear wound in the side

The conclusion? This is not just a random crucified man—it strongly resembles the Gospel accounts of Jesus.

A Historical Connection

A coin from around 700 AD depicts the face of Jesus.

Researchers have noted over 200 points of similarity between that image and the Shroud.

It raises a compelling question:

How did they know what Jesus looked like?

A Personal Note

C. S. Lewis kept a picture of the Shroud in his bedroom.

For him, it was a daily reminder:

His God has a face—and it is the face of Jesus.

Truth Changes Reality

Truth is not determined by feelings—it’s discovered in reality.

And because of the resurrection, we are now living in a completely new reality.

The New Reality of the Resurrection

New Creation

“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…” (2 Corinthians 5:17) You are not improved—you are brand new.

Victory Over Death

“Death is swallowed up in victory…” (1 Corinthians 15:54–55) Death is no longer the final word.

Living Hope

“Born again to a living hope…” (1 Peter 1:3) Hope is no longer wishful thinking—it’s alive.

A New Authority

“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” (Matthew 28:18) A new King and a new Kingdom have been established.

A Reality That Changes Everything

N. T. Wright said:

“The message of Easter is that God’s new world has been unveiled in Jesus Christ.”

And Billy Graham reminded us:

“The resurrection is not just an event—it is a reality that changes everything.”

Final Thought

The empty tomb didn’t just prove something…it started something.

A whole new reality.

Easter is not just a memory—it’s a reality we are living in right now.

When Jesus walked out of that tomb, He didn’t just prove He was who He said He was…

He invited us into a brand-new way of living.
